As a painter for The Music Man, I was given a few specific projects to work on as my own, namely the stone for the Mr. Madison statue and Paroo House, and the signs advertising various businesses in River City. I also assisted the scenic charge in working on the elaborate Americana backdrop.
The stone ended up being a very involved process in order to get the look the designer wanted. After laying out all the bricks, I added grout lines and sponged dirt into the corners and edges of each brick. The whole thing then got sponged with two different grays, partly to give the bricks themselves texture and partly to tone down the intensity of the grout and dirt. Afterwards, the whole thing got a wash of a slightly darker gray, and them was spattered with a dark brown to match the texture of all the other scenery.
The signs were made by projecting a transparency of the rendering onto wood, and then hand-lettering and spattering with three different colors. They were then mounted to the tacking flats and had their colored trim stapled on top.
