Shakespeare in Love is, at its core, a play about the theatre. For the scenic design, I wanted to pay homage to the theatre itself as well as providing a versatile space to tell all of the stories that are being told in this play. The design draws heavily on the Globe Theatre, from the Tudor inspired architecture to the red marble columns. The two-story structure gives the characters ample space to fight, dance, and sing, and we are able to follow the fast-paced action throughout different locations through small props and furniture changes. The open panels on the second level lend an element of abstraction to the whole design: we aren’t in the Globe itself, but instead in a suggestion of the Globe, an amalgamation of many performance spaces.
